Do you know who created jeans? Jeans were created by Levi Strauss in 1987. For the first time, jeans were worn by the miners, because the cloth was made from canvas and did not tear easily. In a short time, jeans became famous among the miners (forumkami, 2010).

We know that jeans are popular around the world, but, do you know how jeans become popular? Apparently jeans became popular because of the cowboy movies in 1930s. The actors in the movie wore jeans as their costumes. It changed the image of jeans as the trousers of workers became one of the casual suits. Jeans also were worn by the American soldiers in the world war. They wore it in their off day. After the world war, jeans became popular among the teenagers as “must have item”. In 1960s, the hippy girls made a new trend style. They wore jeans which were decorated with painting or embroidery. The last, jeans became popular because of the designers. They made their own jeans style and gave their label on the jeans. In 1960s, jeans were a “western decadence” in non-western country. US Company said that they often received letters from people all around the world asking them to send the writer a pair of jeans (newint, 1998).

Nowadays, jeans are worn not only by the miner, but also people around the world. Jeans even become a trend. For example in Gorontalo State University, most of the students wear jeans. Some of the lecturers in Gorontalo State University also wear jeans as their informal suit. Not only in Gorontalo State University, but also people in Gorontalo generally wear jeans. Wherever they go, whatever they do, except in formal condition, we can see they wear jeans. So, jeans are “evolving” from the trouser of workers become the universal trousers.

As a teenager, I wear jeans too. I try to wear many kinds of jeans, such as skinny jeans or boot cut. However, I try to wear jeans which suit to my body. Most of people also wear jeans which suit to their body. That is why many designers create many kinds of jeans. They try to fill the needs of people around the world. As a result, we know 8 kinds of jeans today, they are “straight cut jeans”, “boot cut jeans”, “wide cut jeans”, “skinny jeans”, “cropped jeans”, “boyfriend jeans”, “high rise jeans”, and “low rise jeans” (forumkami, 2010).

In conclusion, as a fashion product, jeans have a good effect for changing people’s taste in fashion. Jeans also can evolve and change its image from the trousers of workers become universal trousers. It becomes a trend mark in children, teenagers, even adults. This is one of the cultural phenomenon about how the function of jeans change. We will see many new kinds of jeans in the future, depends on people needs in fashion.
